There’s just something about summertime that feels different.
Maybe it’s the longer evenings, backyard cookouts, kids running through sprinklers, pool days, trips to the lake, or staying outside just a little longer to catch the sunset.
The older I get, the more I realize it’s usually the little things that make summer feel special — the traditions, simple moments, and memories made right at home.
So I thought I’d share a few simple summer traditions that make a house feel a little more like home ☀️
1. Slow Down for Backyard Evenings
Sometimes the best summer nights are the simplest ones.
A few patio chairs, something cold to drink, dinner on the grill, and watching the sun go down after a busy day.
No fancy plans needed.
There’s just something about slowing down outside in the evenings that feels like summer in Oklahoma.
2. Keep Summer Gatherings Simple
Summer entertaining doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect 😅
Some of my favorite summer memories have come from simple get-togethers:
- burgers on the grill
- watermelon on the counter
- folding chairs pulled out last minute
- kids swimming or running around barefoot
People don’t remember perfection — they remember how it felt.
3. Make Something Homemade Together 🍦
Okay… I have to share one of my favorite summer traditions.
Homemade ice cream.
There’s just something nostalgic about it, and it instantly feels like summer to me.
So I thought I’d share my go-to recipe in case you need a good excuse for an ice cream night 😊
✨ Haley’s Homemade Ice Cream Recipe
Makes 1 gallon
Ingredients:
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 cup whipping cream
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- Milk (fill to fill line of ice cream maker)
Directions:
Mix ingredients together and pour into your ice cream maker. Fill to the fill line with milk, then churn according to your machine instructions.
That’s it!
Simple, old-fashioned, and SO good on a hot summer day 🍦
(Pro tip: our family favorite is chopped-up Milky Way bars mixed in 😏 SO good.)
4. Make Time for One Summer Adventure
Not every summer memory has to involve a big vacation.
Sometimes it’s:
- a lake day
- grabbing snow cones
- a quick road trip
- watching fireworks
- checking out something local you’ve never tried before
Little adventures count too.
5. Enjoy the Little Moments at Home
At the end of the day, it’s usually not the expensive things we remember most.
It’s porch conversations.
Pool days.
Late sunsets.
Ice cream with family.
Backyard laughs.
The little moments that quietly turn a house into a home 💗
However you spend your summer, I hope you find time to slow down, make memories, and enjoy the season.
And now I have to ask…
What’s one summer tradition you look forward to every year? ☀️
