The calendar may be moving toward fall, but here in Oklahoma, summer clearly isn’t ready to leave. With temperatures still hovering near the triple digits, this probably isn’t the weekend to tackle a major landscaping project or cover the porch in pumpkins.
The calendar may be moving toward fall, but here in Oklahoma, summer clearly isn’t ready to leave. With temperatures still running hot, this probably isn’t the weekend to tackle a major landscaping project or cover the porch in pumpkins.
It is, however, a great time for a simple between-seasons reset.
After months of intense sun, heat, wind and summer activity, a few areas around the house may be looking tired. These small projects can help your home feel refreshed now while making your bigger fall projects easier once cooler weather finally arrives.
1. Tidy Tired Flower Beds
Start by removing plants that are truly finished for the season, but don’t feel like everything has to go. Healthy summer flowers may still have plenty of life left.
Deadhead spent blooms, trim damaged growth and remove fallen leaves or debris. Even a quick cleanup can make an overgrown bed look intentionally maintained again.
2. Pull Weeds Before They Spread
Weeds have a way of thriving even when everything else is struggling in the heat. Pulling them now helps improve the appearance of your beds and may keep them from producing more seeds.
For the easiest removal, work after watering or a light rain when the soil is softer. Early morning is usually the most comfortable time for both you and the plants.
3. Refresh Mulch Where It’s Needed
You don’t necessarily need to replace every bit of mulch. Rake the existing layer to loosen compacted areas, then add a light amount wherever it looks thin, faded or washed away.
Fresh mulch gives flower beds an immediate visual lift and helps the soil retain moisture during these lingering hot days. Keep it a few inches away from plant stems and the base of your home.
4. Give the Porch a Quick Reset
Summer leaves behind plenty of dust, pollen, cobwebs and evidence of everyday life.
Sweep the porch, wipe down the front door, shake out the welcome mat and clean outdoor furniture. Remove any décor that looks weathered or faded. You may discover that your porch doesn’t need a complete seasonal makeover—just a good cleaning and a little breathing room.
5. Clean Windows and Screens
Dusty windows and screens can make the whole exterior look dull. Rinse away loose dirt, gently clean the glass and check screens for small tears or loose edges.
Clean windows also let in more natural light, which can make the inside of your home feel brighter and fresher as the days gradually become shorter.
6. Check Exterior Lighting
Even if the temperatures still feel like midsummer, daylight is slowly changing.
Walk around the exterior in the evening and check porch lights, garage lights, pathway lighting and motion sensors. Replace burned-out bulbs, wipe off dusty fixtures and make sure walkways are clearly illuminated.
7. Walk the Exterior and Make a List
This doesn’t have to become a workday. Take ten minutes to walk around your home and look for:
- Peeling or cracked caulk
- Loose trim or siding
- Damaged screens
- Dripping outdoor faucets
- Clogged or sagging gutters
- Fence or gate repairs
- Areas where water isn’t draining properly
Take a few photos or make a simple list. You can handle urgent concerns now and save the larger projects for cooler, more comfortable weekends.
8. Plan Fall Projects Without Rushing Them
September heat can be tough on new plants—and on the person planting them! Instead of forcing a full fall transformation too early, use this time to decide what you want to tackle once the weather cooperates.
Make a list of plants you may want to add, outdoor repairs that need attention and seasonal items you’ll eventually bring out. Planning now means you’ll be ready to take advantage of the first genuinely pleasant weekend.
A Little Progress Is Plenty
A seasonal refresh doesn’t have to mean an expensive makeover or an exhausting weekend project. Choose two or three tasks that will make the biggest difference and leave the rest for another day.
The goal is simply to help your home recover from summer and create a smoother transition into fall—whenever fall decides to arrive.
Here’s to enjoying and caring for your home in every season—even the seasons that take their sweet time showing up.
