November always seems to begin quietly—and then suddenly the calendar is full.
Between holiday plans, school activities, packages arriving and people coming and going, the season can become busy before we realize it. The good news is that you don’t need to deep-clean your entire house or complete a major organizing project to feel more prepared.
A few small things now can make your home function better and help the weeks ahead feel a little less hectic.
1. Clear the Entryway
Your entryway is about to work overtime. Make a little room for coats, shoes, bags and guests by putting away anything your family won’t need for the next few weeks.
Add a basket for hats and gloves, clear a few hooks and make sure there’s an obvious place for visitors to leave their belongings. It doesn’t have to look perfect—it just needs to make coming and going easier.
2. Create a Holiday Delivery Zone
Packages, returns, gift receipts and shipping supplies can quickly take over the nearest countertop.
Choose one designated place for everything related to holiday deliveries. It could be a basket, a shelf, part of a closet or a corner of the laundry room.
Keep scissors, tape, a marker and a few mailing supplies nearby. When everything has a home, you’re less likely to lose a return label—or accidentally leave a surprise sitting in plain sight.
3. Give the Guest Spaces a Quick Check
Even if you aren’t expecting overnight guests, it’s helpful to make sure the spaces visitors may use are ready.
Freshen the guest bathroom, check your supply of toilet paper and clean towels, and restock a few basic toiletries. If someone will be staying overnight, check the bedding and make sure there’s an accessible outlet or charger.
These are small details, but they make guests feel especially welcome.
4. Make Some Room in the Kitchen
Before the holiday groceries arrive, take a few minutes to look through the refrigerator, freezer and pantry.
Toss anything expired, combine duplicate items and make a quick inventory of the baking and cooking staples you already have. Clearing even one refrigerator shelf or a little freezer space can make holiday meal preparation much easier.
This is also a good time to locate the containers you’ll use for leftovers. Matching lids now will save you from searching for them later.
5. Gather Your Hosting Essentials
You don’t need to set the table weeks in advance, but it helps to know where everything is.
Find your serving dishes, table linens, extra chairs, trivets and food-storage containers. Check whether anything needs to be washed, repaired or replaced.
Even if you aren’t hosting Thanksgiving, having a few essentials ready makes it easier to welcome friends, contribute a dish or handle an impromptu gathering.
6. Take Care of One Overlooked Home Task
You know that small household task you keep noticing and promising to handle later? Choose one and take care of it now.
That might mean:
- Replacing a burned-out light bulb
- Changing an air filter
- Testing smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors
- Tightening a loose doorknob
- Fixing a dripping faucet
- Checking outdoor lighting
- Adding weatherstripping around a drafty door
You don’t need to finish an entire list. Completing one lingering task still makes your home feel more cared for—and removes one thing from the back of your mind.
7. Decide What You’re Not Going to Stress About
This may be the most important step.
Your home does not have to be spotless, perfectly decorated or ready for a magazine photoshoot to feel warm and welcoming. Decide what matters most to you this season—and give yourself permission to let some of the rest go.
Maybe the guest room won’t be completely reorganized. Maybe the decorations will be simpler this year. Maybe dinner will include something from the bakery instead of everything being homemade.
The people you love are far more likely to remember how they felt in your home than whether every corner was perfect.
A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way
The goal isn’t to add more pressure before the holidays. It’s to handle a few small things now so you have more room to enjoy what’s coming.
Choose one or two items from this list and start there. Your future holiday-season self will be glad you did.
Here’s to a home that feels welcoming, comfortable and ready for real life—during the holidays and every day in between.
