Summer vacations, weekends at the lake, family trips, quick getaways… they’re some of the best parts of the season ☀️
But let’s be honest — nothing ruins coming home from vacation faster than walking into a hot house because the AC quit, storm damage, or finding out your fridge smell has officially declared war on your kitchen 😅
Before you head out of town this summer, here are a few simple things you can do to help protect your home and hopefully avoid unwanted surprises when you get back.
1. Adjust Your Thermostat (But Don’t Turn It Off)
I know… the temptation is real to shut that AC completely off while you’re gone.
But especially here in Oklahoma heat, that can actually create bigger problems.
Instead, raise your thermostat a few degrees (think around 78–82° depending on comfort and pets) to help save energy while still protecting your home from excess heat and humidity buildup.
Your AC — and your electric bill — will thank you.
2. Put a Few Lights on Timers
A dark house for days at a time can be an obvious sign no one’s home.
Setting a couple of lamps or exterior lights on timers is an easy way to make things look lived in while you’re away.
Bonus points if you have smart bulbs you can control from your phone 👏
3. Pause Mail & Package Deliveries
Nothing says “Nobody’s home!” quite like a pile of Amazon boxes and an overflowing mailbox.
If you’ll be gone for several days, consider:
- Pausing mail delivery
- Asking a neighbor to grab packages
- Putting holds on deliveries if possible
A quick little step can go a long way toward peace of mind.
4. Check for Water Leaks Before You Leave
This one is easy to overlook — but can save you from a major headache.
Before leaving:
✔️ Check under sinks
✔️ Look at washing machine hoses
✔️ Make sure faucets aren’t dripping
✔️ Double-check your dishwasher area
If you’ll be gone for an extended trip, some homeowners even choose to shut off their main water supply.
5. Prep for Oklahoma Summer Storms
Because if there’s one thing we know around here… Oklahoma weather likes to keep us guessing 😅
Before heading out:
- Secure patio furniture or umbrellas
- Bring lightweight outdoor items inside
- Check weather alerts
- Let a trusted friend or neighbor know you’ll be away
A quick check can save you from returning to a backyard surprise.
6. Empty the Trash (Trust Me on This One 😂)
Future you will be grateful.
Take out trash, toss perishables, and do a quick fridge check before you head out.
No one wants to come home from vacation to mystery smells.
7. Let Someone You Trust Keep an Eye on Things
Whether it’s family, a neighbor, or a trusted friend, it never hurts to have someone who can:
- Grab packages
- Check on the house
- Keep an eye out after storms
Sometimes just knowing someone nearby can give you a little extra peace of mind while you’re away.
One Last Thought Before You Go…
Vacations should be relaxing — not spent worrying about what might be happening back home.
A few small prep steps before you leave can make a big difference and help you enjoy your trip knowing things are taken care of.
And hey — if you ever need a trusted recommendation before a trip (lawn care, pest control, handyman, house sitter, you name it), just reach out… I probably have a person 😉
